Buying a pocket flashlight: lumens, battery and size
20 September 2026 · 2 min read
Flashlight listings are written to impress, not to inform. Four numbers decide whether a light suits you, and only one of them is usually advertised honestly. Here is how to read them before you spend.
1. Lumens: brightness, not usefulness
A lumen measures total light output. More is not automatically better, for two reasons. First, the figure on the box is usually the highest mode, measured at the instant it is switched on with a full battery. A small light cannot hold that: it gets hot, and it steps down. Second, beyond a point extra brightness only bounces back at you in a narrow corridor or a dusty room.
For everyday use around a home, a stairwell, a vehicle or a cable run, a modest output is enough. High output earns its place outdoors, over distance.
2. Runtime: the number that decides your evening
Runtime is how long the light holds a usable brightness, not how long until it dies completely. If a listing gives runtime only for its lowest mode, that tells you what the manufacturer is not saying about the high one. If you use a torch during load-shedding, runtime matters more than peak lumens.
3. The beam: flood or throw
- Flood (wide) lights up a room or a work surface. COB lights are floods. This is what you want for repairs, cooking, reading a meter, finding something in a bag.
- Throw (narrow) reaches down a lane or across a field. A focused LED does this.
Most people need flood far more often than throw, and buy throw because it looks more impressive in photographs.
4. Size, charging and how it attaches
This is where a light is won or lost, because a torch you left at home has no specifications at all.
| Size | Keyring lights are always with you. Pocket lights hold more battery. Choose by where it will live, not by the picture. |
| Charging | Type-C means the cable you already carry. An unusual port means a flat light. |
| Attachment | A magnetic tail frees both hands against any steel surface: a meter box, a bike, a door frame. A clip holds it on a cap or a pocket. These matter daily; lumens do not. |
| Battery gauge | A light that tells you what is left is a light you will trust. |
Which of ours fits which use
Rather than repeat specifications that can change, here is the shape of the range; each product page carries the exact figures.
- Work lights (COB): wide flood, magnetic, made for repairs and power cuts. See COB work lights.
- Keyring lights: always on you, for stairwells, locks and bags. See mini flashlights.
Before you pay
Switch it on in front of the courier. Check every mode, check the charging port, check the clip or magnet holds. That is what check delivery is for, and it takes a minute.
দেখুন COB work light।
